The events on Celia and slavery in general represented a threat to the new "cult of domesticity" in america because women were starting to gain control. Where as before Celia and other women were looked down upon and Celia in her case was just "property". Men would abuse women sexually and sometimes violently and there were no laws that could pretect them. Then with this new "cult of domesticity" it put women as equals and along with societies unit and protected the women from harm.
